A warning cry tore Cora from her fitful sleep. She sat upright and found Haden already halfway out of the tent.

“There are three Shades!” That was Kensington’s voice, and Cora felt a scalding fear tear down her spine. Not even bothering to slip on her boots, she stumbled from the tent and into chaos.

The guards pushed back one of the Shades, and it fled into the darkness beyond the light of the campfire.

Haden was locked in a battle with another. This one moved faster than the one that had run, which meant it had already fed off more Faes’ lives. It seemed to be trying to corral Haden toward the flames in the center of the camp.

With a violent heave of her stomach, she realized a body sat smoldering in the flames. The Shades had already taken one of their men.

“Cora!” Kensington yelled before she was hit from behind. She had let herself get distracted, freezing at the sight of death, and had missed the Shade running for her.

Dirt filled her mouth, and she coughed as she breathed it in. Her heart beat wildly as a crackling, hissing sound filled her ears, and a weight that almost didn’t feel corporeal pushed her head into the ground so she couldn’t turn it. She continued coughing and choking, unable to get a good breath in as the dirt filled her lungs.

The pressure on her head lifted suddenly, and she turned to find Kensington pushing the beast back. His movements were so fast she almost couldn’t track them, and it did not take long for the Shade to run away into the darkness.

Cora continued to cough, dispelling the choking debris from her lungs. She felt the warmth of her magic boost her efforts, and soon she was able to breathe easily.

The other guards had joined Haden, and they fought near the fire. The flames seemed to reach out toward them, as though the Shade could manipulate the element to aid in its effort. Cora held her breath, wary of how closely the flames licked at one of the guard’s nightclothes.

Kensington doused the fire using his Water magic, and the Shade turned and ran, its best option for taking out the trained men gone.

Silence stretched on as the light Haden called to his palm threw flickering shadows across the tents.

“Is everyone all right?” Haden asked, breaking the silence.

Everyone nodded as they turned toward the lost member of their party. Cora couldn’t find the strength to take stock of the men and find out which one he was. The horror was too strong.

Haden strode toward Cora, who still sat on the ground. Kensington was standing at her back, his eyes scanning the darkness as though worried any of the Shades might return.

She took Haden’s offered hand, and he pulled her into his side, keeping her close with one arm.

“I am glad you are safe,” he whispered so only she could hear.

She pulled back, noticing that he shifted so his free arm that still held the light stayed away from her hands as she wrapped her arms around him.
